9/11: Phone Calls from the Towers.

The Prime Focus Broadcast division in the UK was previously known as blue.

blue has completed post work on a documentary about the final telephone calls made by people who died in the terrorist attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre on 11th September 2001 to their loved ones. '9/11: Phone Calls from the Towers' is a Darlow Smithson production for Channel 4.

The documentary is an insight into some of the lives lost on that fateful day, demonstrated by the poignant phone calls made by some of the thousands of people trapped inside the World Trade Center, many of the calls are being broadcast for the first time.

"I would like to thank everyone at blue for all their hard work on this project" said Darlow Smithson’s Pete Hirst, Production Manager on the documentary. "The creative input from both Richard and Clive has really helped to enhance the sensitive nature of this film, and coupled with the efficiency and positive attitude of Nicola Whitehead, despite an ever reducing delivery schedule, the whole process has been seamless and trouble free."

blue’s Colourist, Richard Fearon, a 2009 Broadcast Hot Shot, graded the documentary using blue’s new Baselight 4 data grading system. "The audio is the key element to the whole programme, hearing these people talking at that moment and their reaction to their situation. It was therefore important not to dramatise the piece any further with the grade because it is already so powerful. It was a case of giving it a naturalistic look throughout, and allowing it to breathe."

"There were aerial shots of New York and the iconic Towers and then pans of lonely rooms, so it was a case of building up an atmosphere in the opening scenes which we did by adding contrast and keeping it cold" added Richard. "As the victim’s relatives were telling their stories, we didn’t want to make it stylistsic, we wanted to keep it very natural in its look. It was important when matching the archive home video footage with the real life footage that we kept continuity between them."
