Prime Focus has completed post production on director Ben Hume-Paton's launch film for the Honda CR-Z hybrid coupé for Gaucho Productions, a London-based film and digital agency. The 90 second film debuted at the international press launch of the CR-Z and will be used for press and marketing across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Shot over a day and two nights in southern Spain, on a mixture of formats including RED Camera and Canon 7D, the footage was then brought back to Prime Focus in London who provided the editing, graphics and grade in post.
"The car had three different driving modes - sport, economy and drive - and for each mode there was an individual colour, style and look which had to be represented throughout the edit," said Smoke Artist Adam Maynard. "Technically the job involved utilising various techniques including comping, tracking, graphics and colour correction. Smoke's tracking capability was perfect for this and helped to ensure that the project ran smoothly."
Stephen Waugh created the graphical elements using After Effects. He said "The client wanted the red, green and blue lighting system on the car to be the inspiration for the graphics. This was a two minute piece with a really fast edit. There were lots of shots all from different sources and with different graphical requirements. We managed to get a really efficient workflow going between myself in After Effects and Adam in Smoke. We created a natural feel to our light trails so they felt that they were caught in camera while still giving the piece the required graphical feel."
Alistair Weaver, Executive Producer and md of Gaucho Productions: "The unusual concept of a stylish, sporty hybrid offered us a great opportunity to push the boundaries. Although this is a fantasy drive we wanted to make it look as real as possible, which meant creating our own laser light show on the Spanish coast and using a challenging mix of formats. The Prime Focus team did a terrific job of managing the media, integrating the graphics and perfecting a difficult grade. Our client was delighted with the result."
The grade was supplied by Prime Focus colourist Richard Fearon.
